What is Domestic Violence?
Domestic violence has many definitions and displays itself in various ways for which some aspects may be physical, verbal or emotional:
• Violence or physical abuse directed toward your spouse or domestic partner.
• Also known as domestic abuse, spousal abuse, or intimate partner violence, abuse occurs when a
family member, partner or ex-partner attempts to physically or psychologically dominate another.
• A pattern of assaultive and coercive behaviors, including physical, sexual, and psychological
attacks, as well as economic coercion, that adults or adolescents use against their intimate part
ners where the perpetrator and victim are currently or have been previously dating, cohabiting or
married.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety Uniform Crime Report, Dallas County reported 28,839 family violence incidents in 2001; 27,901 incidents in 2000 and 28,579 in 1999. The population in Dallas County being supported by 331 domestic violence shelter beds is 2,218,899 according to the 2000 Census.

• HHSC estimates that 982,916 Texas women were battered in 2006.
• More than 800 Texas women were killed by an intimate partner from 1998–2005.
• 31% of all Texans report that they have been severely abused (physically or sexually abused) at
some point in their lifetime. Women report severe abuse at a higher rate than men.
• Dallas County receives approximately 30,000 reports of domestic violence each year but only has
331 domestic violence shelter beds.
